Introducing Our New Tool: Contrast Checker

Contrast Checker tool is a free, quick and easy way to ensure your web designs will be easier to navigate and accessible to a larger audience, particularly to those with visual challenges.

Want to see if your colour choices will pass the test? Just select (or input) your website’s foreground and background colours.

Contrast Checker will instantly let you know if your site meets Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) as set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

Your results will confirm if your website falls within industry standards with a passing, margin or failing grade, calculated based on formulas specified by the W3C. You’re also given the option to test how your page looks to colourblind users by viewing your swatches in grayscale. When you have completed the test, you have the option to share your results.

The web is still growing as a principal information resource for people all around the world, which makes accessibility and standardization essential. As Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web, famously declared in 1997, “the power of the Web is in its universality.” By creating a standard for web content accessibility that can be carried worldwide, the WCAG makes webpages easier to read and more accessible for people with disabilities.

Acart Communications created Contrast Checker because we saw a need for a simple tool that allows web designers and developers to determine if their websites meet accessibility guidelines. And because we believe accessibility is a web fundamental, we’re sharing this tool with you.

Through its simplicity and unique features, Contrast Checker is a great way to make sure your website demonstrates accessibility, thought and care for a wider and more diverse audience.
